You could see him, even though no one else could. You know what he's been through, but all the credit is given to Britain. He's your hero, but his brother is already self proclaimed. His own mother nations can't see him even after all he's done for them. America will waltz in and suddenly he's proclaimed the hero, only because he became fed up with the Germany, not because he was going to support his mother country.
His own brother has tried to take him over, more than once. The fear never left his mind. Russia had owned a part of him at one time, now his brother does. He can't even call it part of him anymore. Another part of him wants to leave for the part is fed up with having their rights taken away, till this day that part still wants leave.
His land is the second largest in the world, but still is never recognized. The only time people usually see him is when they need his resources, his soldiers. Being as kind as he is, he always gave into helping.
"Hey Matthew." You whispered as you sat beside the quiet Canadian nation.
"H-Hi." He greeted still starring at the wall in front of him.
"Matthew, you've been through so much. You need to stop thinking about the past." You stated looking down at your lap.
"T-They can't even see me." He sobbed hugging his polar bear closer to him.
"I know Matthew, I don't know why." You sadly smiled.
"I-I have done so much for them." Matthew cried, tears falling down his cheeks.
"Matthew I know you-"
"You don't understand! I have fought so many battles, I am the reason Vimy Ridge wasn't taken over!" He sobbed, you could feel the tears starting to fall from your eyes as you looked at the broken Canadian.
1812- A War Fought.
At the time Matthew was still becoming a nation, a great nation later called Canada. There were no provinces at this point, only Upper and Lower Canada and the remaining Native tribes. Arthur has yet cut Matthew out of the picture yet, at the time Arthur was fighting against Francis' Napoleonic Empire.
To fight off Francis' empire, Arthur began to take Alfred over seas to help him fight. Alfred saw this as kidnapping and tried to stop it, but it didn't work. Alfred became mad at the fact that Arthur was using him to fight.
Alfred had tried Manifest Destiny before, a concept he made up. Alfred tried taking over his brother's land, thus started the War of 1812. Arthur felt this as a personal attack for Matthew was still a part of him. The Brit started to attack the Atlantic coast of America, while Alfred also was attacking his brother on the border and in the Great Lakes.
In retaliation Matthew burned down one of the most famous symbols Alfred kept dear to his heart. The White House.
Neither side won or lost in this, but Alfred always proclaims he won, for he is the hero.
"H-He's still never really forgiven me for burning down the white house." Matthew stuttered.
"He tried taking your country over, I understand your reasoning." You smiled rubbing the Canadian's sweater clad back.
"My French side and English side never got along, still don't." He sighed hugging Kumajiro closer to him.
"That's understandable." You reasoned.
"Confederation was the hardest and the most rewarding thing in my life time as a country. That's when I became me, that's my birthday" Matthew smiled recalling the memory.
Some Time Before 1867
Alfred had now stopped trading with his brother Matthew, the nation was now left to stand by it's self in the trade sense. As well the American nation was trying Manifest Destiny again. With only four colonies to Matthew's name he was at a loss for what to do, he tried reasoning with the colonies. Except Quebec and Ontario were sworn enemies, it reminded Matthew much like France and England.
He finally got the two provinces to agree, for like Matthew himself were scared of Alfred taking over. Matthew had to set up and attend many conferences, which finally led to a conference in London.
On one faithful day, July 1st, 1867. Matthew became Canada, he became a nation. The four colonies Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia became one. Matthew might have physically became a nation that day, but it wouldn't be until Vimy Ridge were he would be recognized as a nation.
"See Matthew, you have tons of good memories too." You smiled kissing his cheek, causing a blush to appear on the Canadian's cheek.
"W-Well, I d-did meet you." He smiled, kissing your head.
"See, another good memory." You pointed out, the Canadian grabbed one of your hands and held it tightly.
"B-But they still can't see me." He softly said starring into your eyes.
"I know, everyone over looks your victories. But I still remember them, deep down Arthur thanks you. Francis definitely appreciates it, he did build a monument for you." You smiled kissing one of the Canadian's tears away.
"D-Did I ever tell you how I got glasses?" He asked.
"No, I thought you've had them ever since you were little?" You questioned confused.
"I wish, it all started back in 1915." He told you.
April 22nd, 1915; Canada Meets Gas
Matthew was leading his first division in the Battle of Ypres in Belgium. To Matthew's left two French divisions held their ground as they waited to move forward. Sadly this battle wouldn't be one of the victories Francis, Matthew and Arthur were wanting.
Ludwig had one of his many scientists develop the first ever gas, which would be used in the first ever chemical warfare attack. Matthew was waiting quietly with his division, his bright purple eyes glancing across No Man's Land.
That's when it came, a cloud of lethal toxins. The gas had driven the French away, leaving only the Canadians. Matthew held his ground, his troops supporting his moves. Sadly many of his soldiers died, but since Matthew wasn't mortal, he couldn't die. Instead the gas had caused him to lose some of his vision.
Even though Matthew's vision wasn't good anymore, he led his remaining troops to attack the advancing nation Ludwig represented. Matthew fought them off with success, and became known for his bravery and his nation became known as a fighting force.
"T-That's how I-I got my glasses." Matthew muttered, you just starred at the Canadian.
"M-Matthew, that is incredible, you're so brave." You gasped.
"S-Still no one can see me." He cried again, you hugged his side trying to comfort him.
"I remember when you told me the story of Vimy Ridge. You were a huge hero then." You stated holding the Canadian's hand tightly.
"I-I guess." Matthew blushed.
"You were, you're my hero." You sighed catching the Canadian's lips in a sweet kiss,
Vimy Ridge; A Nation, Becomes a Country
This battle would help Matthew step out of Arthur's shadow. One of Matthew's greatest Generals (Arthur Currie), and one of his very close friends helped Matthew lead four divisions to victory. Ludwig was still trying to take France over and end the war for good, but Matthew and General Currie had other ideas.
Using reconnaissance Matthew trained his soldiers to know where every trench, and alleyman lied. Everyman new the plan in case of accidents. Ludwig never expected the attack.
Matthew and Currie led all four Canadian divisions through sleet, during a pitch black night on Easter to the enemy's side. Ludwig was surprised along with his other soldiers, they tried fending off the Canadians but Matthew wasn't going to leave without a fight.
The battle lasted a few days, but Matthew finally captured Vimy Ridge from Ludwig's control. This battle would go down in history for the birth of a nation. Many gave up their lives to win this battle, no one wanted a repeat of the Battle of Somme. Matthew showed true bravery and determination in this battle, giving himself national pride.
As a tribute to Matthew's bravery, Francis built a monument right of the battle field that would commemorate not only Matthew but all his brave soldiers who lost their lives.
That day Matthew became known as a great nation.
"Matthew you're so brave you just can't see it." You cried into his sweater.
"T-Those were the old days, ____." He sighed putting his bear on the ground and hugging you close to him.
"Matthew! You are a strong, brave, amazing nation." You sobbed. "You are my hero."
"R-Really?" He asked.
"Of course, you have saved me from so much. Matthew I love you." You smiled looking up at the handsome Canadian with tear filled eyes.
"B-But all the other-"
"Are jealous they aren't all like you." You stated.
"Je t'aime." Matthew smiled, tears of happiness filling his eyes.
He's been through hardships, tribulations, wars, battles, and being abandoned. He has had wars with his brother, but even that hasn't stopped you from loving the Canadian.
"_-___?" Matthew stuttered.
"Yeah?" You smiled as he wiped some of your tears away.
"W-Will you marry me?" He blushed holding you closer to him.
"Of course! You're my hero, my nation, my only love." You cried jumping onto the Canadian and kissing him. Once you two pulled away he pulled out a gold ring with a ruby embedded maple leaf on top. He slid the ring onto your finger and gingerly kissing you again.
Francis and Arthur may not see him. Alfred may be the only hero. No one may know who he truly is. It indeed bothers him, but if he has you, he doesn't care. He thinks you're his most precious maple leaf, and would do anything for you.
The two of you fell asleep in each other's arms, you had fallen asleep first. Matthew looked down at your angelic sleeping figure. He leaned down and kissed you on the forehead.
"You're my most precious maple leaf, I am so glad I have you." He whispered as he fell asleep with you in his arms.
